For the fifth consecutive year, Southern Asia recorded decline in overseas shipments of whole fresh milk, which decreased by -4.8% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

India dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), mixing up a 5.1% share of total exports. Bhutan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to whole fresh milk exports from India stood at +3.3%. At the same time, Bhutan (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. In India, whole fresh milk exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Pakistan (-37.0% per year) and Bhutan (+6.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 24%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bhutan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of whole fresh milk was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, whole fresh milk imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Afghanistan (X tons) and Maldives (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together generating 94% of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Maldives (with a CAGR of +11.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X), Maldives ($X) and Bangladesh ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 96% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +17.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
