Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of wine decreased by -5.5% to X litres, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wine exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

India represented the main exporting country with an export of around X litres, which amounted to 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X litres), constituting a 27% share of total exports. Maldives (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wine exports from India stood at -5.8%. At the same time, Maldives (+27.5%) and Sri Lanka (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Maldives emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +27.5% from 2012-2021. Sri Lanka (+12 p.p.) and Maldives (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while India saw its share reduced by -16.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest wine supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (+4.2% per year) and Maldives (+34.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per litre, rising by 6.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wine export price decreased by -14.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per litre), while Maldives ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of wine was finally on the rise to reach X litres for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

India was the largest importer of wine in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports recording X litres, which was approx. 58% of total imports in 2021. Maldives (X litres) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Sri Lanka (X litres). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total imports. The following importers - Bhutan (X litres) and Bangladesh (X litres) - together made up 5% of total imports.

Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Maldives (+4.6%), Bangladesh (+3.5%) and Sri Lanka (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Maldives emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +4.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Bhutan (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Maldives (+5.1 p.p.) and Sri Lanka (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wine in Southern Asia, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Maldives ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 15% share.

In India, wine imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Maldives (+2.1% per year) and Sri Lanka (+3.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per litre, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per litre), while Bhutan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
