In 2021, supplies from abroad of woven woolen fabrics was finally on the rise to reach X square meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, woolen fabric imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Bangladesh (X square meters) and India (X square meters) dominates imports structure, together comprising 84% of total imports. Sri Lanka (X square meters) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Pakistan (X square meters) and India (X square meters). All these countries together held approx. 45% share of total imports. Pakistan (X square meters) and Nepal (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Nepal (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, India ($X), Bangladesh ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 90% share of total imports. Pakistan and Nepal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.8%.
Among the main importing countries, Nepal, with a CAGR of +16.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per square meter, growing by 5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nepal ($X per square meter), while Bangladesh ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
