Antibiotic Market Size in Spain

After two years of growth, the Spanish antibiotic market decreased by -42.6% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded prominent growth. Antibiotic consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, antibiotic production shrank slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 11%. Antibiotic production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of antibiotics increased by 18% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, antibiotic exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced setback. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of antibiotic exports from Spain, with a combined 66% share of total exports. India, Vietnam, Pakistan, Indonesia, Algeria, Mexico, Brazil and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +27.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X) remains the key foreign market for antibiotics exports from Spain, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Austria stood at -6.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-1.5% per year) and Italy (+0.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average antibiotic export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+12.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Spain

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of antibiotics decreased by -30.5% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports saw a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, antibiotic imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +43.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 83% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Austria (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of antibiotic imports to Spain, together accounting for 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Belgium, France and Italy, which together accounted for a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +28.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of antibiotics to Spain, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at -1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+6.8% per year) and France (-12.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average antibiotic import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, antibiotic import price decreased by -4.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 79%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+13.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
