In 2022, the Spanish apricot market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a slight descent. Apricot consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Apricot Production in Spain
In value terms, apricot production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 34%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
In 2022, the average yield of apricots in Spain expanded significantly to X tons per ha, increasing by 5.2% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the average apricot yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the apricot harvested area in Spain was estimated at X ha, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -45.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, apricot exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 76%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of apricot exports from Spain, together accounting for 66% of total exports. The UK, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for apricots exports from Spain, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +9.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+2.7% per year) and Italy (+4.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average apricot export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -6.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of apricots imported into Spain skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 502% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, apricot imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a pronounced expansion. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of apricot imports to Spain, with a combined 86% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Greece (with a CAGR of +56.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X), France ($X) and Greece ($X) appeared to be the largest apricot suppliers to Spain, with a combined 83% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Greece, with a CAGR of +53.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average apricot import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.8% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, apricot import price increased by +66.2% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 27% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
