Avocado Market Size in Spain

In 2022, after eight years of growth, there was significant decline in the Spanish avocado market, when its value decreased by -23.8% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. Avocado Production in Spain

In value terms, avocado production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The average yield of avocados in Spain fell slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -1.6% compared with the year before. In general, the yield saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average avocado yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Avocado exports from Spain rose remarkably to X tons in 2022, increasing by 6.5% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, avocado exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

France (X tons) was the main destination for avocado exports from Spain, with a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, avocado exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.4% share.

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for avocados exports from Spain, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to France totaled +12.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+18.9% per year) and Germany (+8.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average avocado export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -16.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After ten years of growth, supplies from abroad of avocados decreased by -5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, avocado imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 57%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Peru (X tons) constituted the largest avocado supplier to Spain, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, avocado imports from Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Morocco (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Peru totaled +18.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+39.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+35.8% per year).

In value terms, Peru ($X) constituted the largest supplier of avocados to Spain, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Peru amounted to +19.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+49.9% per year) and Mexico (+22.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average avocado import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -11.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
