The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 122%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Morocco (X tons) was the main destination for sulphite wood pulp exports from Spain, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, sulphite wood pulp exports to Morocco exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), sevenfold. Portugal (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Morocco totaled -3.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+29.0% per year) and Portugal (-23.7% per year).
In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the key foreign market for chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) exports from Spain, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 6.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Morocco amounted to -3.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+31.6% per year) and Portugal (-21.1% per year).

Imports into Spain
After four years of growth, purchases abroad of chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) decreased by -68% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports showed a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 129%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sulphite wood pulp imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a precipitous decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest sulphite wood pulp supplier to Spain, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, sulphite wood pulp imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (X tons), with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany amounted to -9.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (-42.9% per year) and Italy (-4.8% per year).
