Chestnut Market Size in Spain

In 2021, the Spanish chestnut market decreased by -10.9% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, posted mild growth. Chestnut consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Chestnut Production in Spain

In value terms, chestnut production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the average chestnut yield in Spain shrank to X kg per ha, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the yield recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the yield increased by 37%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per ha. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut exports reduced modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 76%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) were the main destinations of chestnut exports from Spain, together accounting for 88% of total exports. Germany, the UK and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.8%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in the UK (with a CAGR of +44.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Italy ($X) and Portugal ($X) were the largest markets for chestnut exported from Spain worldwide, together comprising 85% of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, the UK and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 9.7%.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of chestnuts decreased by -4.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a tangible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 111% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 141% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Portugal (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of chestnut to Spain, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, chestnut imports from Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Chile (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Portugal totaled +1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+16.1% per year) and Italy (+8.2% per year).

In value terms, Portugal ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chestnut to Spain, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Portugal totaled +2.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Chile (+19.3% per year) and Italy (+2.6% per year).

In 2021, the average chestnut import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern.
