In 2022, the average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in Spain amounted to less than X kg per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 85%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 120% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
Portugal (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) were the main destinations of exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from Spain, with a combined 60% share of total exports. Cameroon, Senegal, the UK, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Algeria, Congo, Gambia, Guinea and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Liberia (with a CAGR of +165.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($X), Portugal ($X) and Cameroon ($X) constituted the largest markets for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre exported from Spain worldwide, with a combined 48% share of total exports. Tunisia, Senegal, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo, Algeria, Gambia, Liberia, Guinea and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
Among the main countries of destination, Liberia, with a CAGR of +159.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 24% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Senegal (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Coconut, Abaca, Ramie and other Vegetable Textile Fibres
Imports into Spain
After seven years of growth, supplies from abroad of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -14.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre to Spain, accounting for a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sri Lanka (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Kenya (X tons), with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India amounted to +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (-2.9% per year) and Kenya (+5.0% per year).
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres to Spain, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from India amounted to +8.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (+7.8% per year) and Ecuador (+5.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average import price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while the price for Sri Lanka ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
