The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Portugal (X tons), France (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) were the main destinations of corrugated paper exports from Spain, with a combined 72% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Italy, Slovenia and Germany, which together accounted for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Slovenia (with a CAGR of +125.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, corrugated paper imports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a notable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 119%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of corrugated paper to Spain, accounting for a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, corrugated paper imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovenia (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to +5.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+0.5% per year) and Slovenia (+42.5% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of corrugated paper and paperboard to Spain, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 13% share.

Based on 2021 figures, corrugated paper import price decreased by -6.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Portugal ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the price for Slovenia ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
