The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, direct dye exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
France (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of direct dye exports from Spain, together accounting for 64% of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, Peru, Mexico, Bangladesh, Austria and Saudi Arabia, which together accounted for a further 25%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +71.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for direct dye exported from Spain worldwide, together accounting for 62% of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Egypt, Bangladesh, Morocco, Peru, Mexico, Austria, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, which together accounted for a further 23%.
Among the main countries of destination, Egypt, with a CAGR of +63.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average direct dye export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 12%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of direct dyes and preparations based thereon decreased by -7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -30.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 33%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, direct dye imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -21.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 42%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of direct dye to Spain, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, direct dye imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), fivefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India stood at +3.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+4.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+17.9% per year).
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of direct dyes and preparations based thereon to Spain, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from India amounted to +3.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+23.3% per year) and the United States (+4.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average direct dye import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 27% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
