Garlic Market Size in Spain

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -16.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 55%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Germany (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of garlic exports from Spain, together comprising 39% of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of garlic decreased by -25% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 77%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Spain, accounting for a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, garlic imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (+0.7% per year) and Belgium (+12.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Spain, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+33.1% per year) and France (-6.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average garlic import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -18.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 20%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
