Graphite Market Size in Spain

In 2021, the Spanish graphite market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption continues to indicate a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Graphite exports from Spain surged to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 26% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, showed a sharp decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 45%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, graphite exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Mexico (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of graphite exports from Spain, together comprising 38% of total exports. Colombia, Poland, Algeria, Morocco, the Czech Republic, Germany, Thailand, India, Cuba and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 56%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in China (with a CAGR of +185.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for graphite exported from Spain were France ($X), Colombia ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 45% of total exports. These countries were followed by Mexico, the Czech Republic, Poland, India, Morocco, Algeria, Thailand, Germany, China and Cuba, which together accounted for a further 44%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +195.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average graphite export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 138% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+33.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of graphite (natural) increased by 44% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, graphite imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Madagascar (X tons), China (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of graphite imports to Spain, together comprising 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by Canada, Portugal, Turkey and the UK, which together accounted for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Turkey (with a CAGR of +632.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest graphite suppliers to Spain were Madagascar ($X), Germany ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 79% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Canada, the UK, Portugal and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 16%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +360.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average graphite import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 16%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
