Hazelnut Market Size in Spain

Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, hazelnut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 1,158% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main destinations of hazelnut exports from Spain, with a combined 82% share of total exports. France, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

In 2021, overseas purchases of hazelnuts increased by 69% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports posted strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hazelnut imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +109.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 63%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Portugal (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of hazelnut to Spain, accounting for a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, hazelnut imports from Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), fourfold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Portugal totaled +166.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-1.8% per year) and the United States (-10.4% per year).

In value terms, Portugal ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hazelnut to Spain, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 29% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Portugal amounted to +141.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+0.5% per year) and the United States (-11.7% per year).
