Maize Market Size in Spain

The Spanish maize market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, with an increase of 45% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of maize in Spain dropped to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -2.2% on the year before. In value terms, maize exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Portugal (X tons), the UK (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of maize exports from Spain, with a combined 60% share of total exports. Belgium, Turkey, Romania, Egypt and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize export price increased by +53.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 73% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +39.4% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
