For the third consecutive year, the Spanish soft drink market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -92.6% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption showed a precipitous slump. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, soft drink exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 25%. Portugal (X litres) was the main destination for soft drink exports from Spain, accounting for a 33% share of total exports. Moreover, soft drink exports to Portugal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X litres), threefold. France (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Portugal totaled +9.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+44.3% per year) and France (-1.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for soft drink exported from Spain were Portugal ($X), the UK ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 44% of total exports. Ghana, the Netherlands, Italy, Morocco, Senegal, Belgium, Cote d'Ivoire, Sweden, Mali and Equatorial Guinea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +38.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average soft drink export price stood at $X per litre in 2021, declining by -8.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 11%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of soft drinks increased by 17% to X litres, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +50.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 26%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, soft drink imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Portugal (X litres) constituted the largest soft drink supplier to Spain, with a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, soft drink imports from Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X litres), twofold. France (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Portugal totaled +22.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+3.8% per year) and France (+7.3% per year).
In value terms, Portugal ($X), Austria ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest soft drink suppliers to Spain, together accounting for 54% of total imports. The Netherlands, France, Italy, Belgium and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
Among the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +36.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average soft drink import price amounted to $X per litre, which is down by -3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 13% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per litre), while the price for Portugal ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
