Plum And Sloe Market Size in Spain

In 2022, the Spanish plum and sloe market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 32%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plum and sloe exports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Germany (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of plum and sloe exports from Spain, with a combined 49% share of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Mexico, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Argentina, which together accounted for a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +76.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Argentina (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of plums and sloes increased by 3.2% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. In 2022, South Africa (X tons) constituted the largest plum and sloe supplier to Spain, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, plum and sloe imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (X tons), more than tenfold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Africa totaled +18.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (-1.4% per year) and the Netherlands (-9.1% per year).

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plums and sloes to Spain, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from South Africa stood at +13.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-9.1% per year) and Portugal (+0.3% per year).

In 2022, the average plum and sloe import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -9.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
