In 2021, the Spanish quince market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Quince Production in Spain

In value terms, quince production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -33.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the average yield of quinces in Spain stood at X tons per ha, rising by 2.5% against the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 45% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the average quince yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of quinces production in Spain shrank to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2020. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 1.7% against the previous year. In 2021, the amount of quinces exported from Spain dropped remarkably to X tons, declining by -28.2% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +57.3% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 56%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, quince exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 45%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

France (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) were the main destinations of quince exports from Spain, together accounting for 86% of total exports. Italy, Poland, Switzerland and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Poland (with a CAGR of +38.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for quince exports from Spain, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 16% share.

In 2021, approx. X tons of quinces were imported into Spain; picking up by 27% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 836%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, quince imports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 479%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Turkey (X tons), Portugal (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of quince imports to Spain, with a combined 82% share of total imports. Croatia, France, Romania and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of quince to Spain, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Portugal ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Croatia, with a 9% share.
