The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 47%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

France (X tons) was the main destination for shelled hazelnut exports from Spain, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Portugal (X tons), threefold. Mexico (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France totaled +4.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (+4.7% per year) and Mexico (-1.8% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for shelled hazelnuts exports from Spain, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Portugal ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Venezuela, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France totaled +4.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (+4.5% per year) and Venezuela (-14.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average shelled hazelnut export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, shelled hazelnut export price increased by +17.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 63% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Argentina (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Spain

Shelled hazelnut imports into Spain amounted to X tons in 2021, growing by 13% on the previous year. In general, total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +65.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest shelled hazelnut supplier to Spain, with a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Georgia (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey amounted to -1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+13.2% per year) and Georgia (-0.4% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Italy ($X) and Georgia ($X) were the largest shelled hazelnut suppliers to Spain, together comprising 86% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, the Netherlands, Bulgaria and Luxembourg, which together accounted for a further 13%.

Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +114.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average shelled hazelnut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -7.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Luxembourg (+67.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
