The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 47%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

France (X tons) was the main destination for shelled hazelnut exports from Spain, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Portugal (X tons), threefold. Mexico (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France totaled +4.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (+4.7% per year) and Mexico (-1.8% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for shelled hazelnuts exports from Spain, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Portugal ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Venezuela, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France totaled +4.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (+4.5% per year) and Venezuela (-14.2% per year).

Shelled hazelnut imports into Spain amounted to X tons in 2021, growing by 13% on the previous year. In general, total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +65.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest shelled hazelnut supplier to Spain, with a 53% share of total imports. In value terms, Turkey ($X), Italy ($X) and Georgia ($X) were the largest shelled hazelnut suppliers to Spain, together comprising 86% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, the Netherlands, Bulgaria and Luxembourg, which together accounted for a further 13%.

Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +114.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
