The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

For the sixth consecutive year, Spain recorded growth in purchases abroad of spinach, which increased by 54% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, spinach imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 76%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of spinach to Spain, with a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, spinach imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), fourfold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from France totaled +20.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+9.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+5.7% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) constituted the largest supplier of spinach to Spain, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from France totaled +19.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+7.5% per year) and Portugal (-3.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average spinach import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -12.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
