The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 337%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

France (X tons) was the main destination for sugar beet exports from Spain, with a 97% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany (X tons), with a 2.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to France totaled +52.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-16.1% per year) and Portugal (-16.0% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for sugar beet exports from Spain, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to France stood at +47.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-16.3% per year) and Portugal (-9.2% per year).

In 2022, overseas purchases of sugar beet increased by 22% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 145% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sugar beet imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 741% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, France (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sugar beet to Spain, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, sugar beet imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Portugal (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with an 18% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from France amounted to -1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Portugal (-19.0% per year) and Germany (-7.4% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sugar beet to Spain, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany stood at -15.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-9.5% per year) and Portugal (-11.5% per year).

The average sugar beet import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -36.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 261% against the previous year.
