For the third consecutive year, the Spanish unmanufactured tobacco market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -2.4% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption showed a abrupt decline. Unmanufactured tobacco consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Production in Spain

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 21%. Unmanufactured tobacco production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average unmanufactured tobacco yield in Spain reduced slightly to X tons per ha, which is down by -4.6% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the average unmanufactured tobacco yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of tobacco (unmanufactured) production in Spain amounted to X ha, growing by 1.8% on the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. In 2022, unmanufactured tobacco exports from Spain reduced to X tons, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, exports recorded a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 43%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Portugal (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Spain, with a combined 64% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +10.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Portugal ($X), Belgium ($X) and Poland ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from Spain worldwide, together comprising 70% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +10.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of tobacco (unmanufactured), when their volume increased by 14% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 19%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of unmanufactured tobacco to Spain, accounting for a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Philippines (X tons), fourfold. The Dominican Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Indonesia amounted to +2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Philippines (+1.6% per year) and the Dominican Republic (-11.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest unmanufactured tobacco suppliers to Spain were the Philippines ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports. The Dominican Republic, Portugal, Switzerland, France, Germany, Brazil, the United States, Malawi, Belgium and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Belgium, with a CAGR of +78.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average unmanufactured tobacco import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -14.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 49% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+14.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
