Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) were the main destinations of preserved tuna exports from Spain, together comprising 74% of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Morocco, Belgium and Germany, which together accounted for a further 10%.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of tuna (prepared or preserved) decreased by -0.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -10.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 28%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, preserved tuna imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -8.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 54%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Ecuador (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of preserved tuna to Spain, accounting for a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved tuna imports from Ecuador exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. Papua New Guinea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Ecuador amounted to +2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+32.5% per year) and Papua New Guinea (+8.3% per year).
In value terms, Ecuador ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tuna (prepared or preserved) to Spain, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Papua New Guinea, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Ecuador was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+30.7% per year) and Papua New Guinea (+5.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average preserved tuna import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year.
