Walnut Market Size in Spain

The Spanish walnut market shrank to $X in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a mild shrinkage. Walnut consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Walnut Production in Spain

In value terms, walnut production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the average yield of walnuts in Spain reached X tons per ha, rising by 4.9% on the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. The walnut yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the walnut harvested area in Spain fell slightly to X ha, with a decrease of -3.5% on the previous year. Over the period under review, the total harvested area indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, walnut harvested area increased by +52.1% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 10%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to walnut production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of walnuts were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, walnut exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 28%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Portugal (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) were the main destinations of walnut exports from Spain, with a combined 68% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Germany, France, Greece, Turkey and the United States, which together accounted for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +63.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Portugal ($X), Italy ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for walnut exported from Spain worldwide, together comprising 65% of total exports. Germany, France, the UK, Greece, Turkey and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Germany, with a CAGR of +60.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average walnut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 8.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Morocco (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, approx. X tons of walnuts were imported into Spain; surging by 3% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, walnut imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 20%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest walnut supplier to Spain, accounting for a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, walnut imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), twofold. Chile (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 21% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-6.2% per year) and Chile (+16.9% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X), France ($X) and Chile ($X) appeared to be the largest walnut suppliers to Spain, together accounting for 93% of total imports. These countries were followed by Argentina and Australia, which together accounted for a further 5.2%.

Argentina, with a CAGR of +77.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average walnut import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices from Chile ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) and Argentina ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
