Wood Fuel Market Size in Spain

For the third consecutive year, the Spanish wood fuel market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 21% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. Wood fuel consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of wood fuel decreased by -51% to X cubic meters, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 1,004%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood fuel exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 380%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

France (X cubic meters), Portugal (X cubic meters) and Denmark (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of wood fuel exports from Spain, with a combined 85% share of total exports. Belgium, Sweden, Andorra and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +1,997.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Portugal ($X) and Denmark ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for wood fuel exported from Spain worldwide, together comprising 74% of total exports. The Netherlands, Belgium, Andorra and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Among the main countries of destination, Sweden, with a CAGR of +323.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average wood fuel export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, growing by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted pronounced growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 201% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X cubic meters of wood fuel were imported into Spain; rising by 46% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 191% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood fuel imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 280% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
