Yoghurt Market Size in Spain

After two years of growth, the Spanish yoghurt market decreased by -0.1% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced contraction. Yoghurt consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, yoghurt production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Yoghurt production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of yoghurt decreased by -1.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 16%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, yoghurt exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Portugal (X tons) was the main destination for yoghurt exports from Spain, with a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, yoghurt exports to Portugal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), more than tenfold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Portugal was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-2.1% per year) and Belgium (+8.3% per year).

In value terms, Portugal ($X) remains the key foreign market for yoghurt exports from Spain, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Portugal totaled -1.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+2.4% per year) and Belgium (+7.1% per year).

In 2022, the average yoghurt export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -7.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, purchases abroad of yoghurt was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 7.5%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, yoghurt imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

France (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) were the main suppliers of yoghurt imports to Spain, together accounting for 75% of total imports. Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +102.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Germany ($X) and Portugal ($X) appeared to be the largest yoghurt suppliers to Spain, together accounting for 75% of total imports. Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
