Aluminium Bar Market Size in Sri Lanka
The Sri Lankan aluminium bar market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a modest increase. Aluminium bar consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Sri Lanka
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of aluminium bars, rods and profiles, when their volume decreased by -24.9% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 199%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, aluminium bar exports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 301% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The UK (X tons) was the main destination for aluminium bar exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, aluminium bar exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (X tons), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the UK stood at +68.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+87.1% per year) and the United States (+26.7% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for aluminium bars, rods and profiles exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK amounted to +32.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+143.0% per year) and the United States (+19.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average aluminium bar export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -18% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 34% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+29.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Sri Lanka
In 2021, aluminium bar imports into Sri Lanka declined sharply to X tons, reducing by -20.8% compared with 2020. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, aluminium bar imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest aluminium bar supplier to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, aluminium bar imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +11.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-5.2% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+29.7% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of aluminium bars, rods and profiles to Sri Lanka, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 9.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +13.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-2.8% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+28.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average aluminium bar import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+12.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
