Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Singapore (X tons) was the main destination for iron angle exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, iron angle exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Nepal (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Maldives (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Singapore amounted to +23.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nepal (-45.8% per year) and Maldives (+1.9% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for iron angle exported from Sri Lanka were Maldives ($X), Nepal ($X) and Singapore ($X), together accounting for 75% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Japan and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +24.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average iron angle export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -14.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+12.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Sri Lanka
In 2021, approx. X tons of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) were imported into Sri Lanka; with a decrease of -17.7% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 88%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, iron angle imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 83%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
India (X tons), China (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) were the main suppliers of iron angle imports to Sri Lanka, together comprising 75% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Bahrain (with a CAGR of +34.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, India ($X), China ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the largest iron angle suppliers to Sri Lanka, together comprising 72% of total imports. Bahrain, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

The average iron angle import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 40% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
