Antibiotic Market Size in Sri Lanka

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the Sri Lankan antibiotic market, when its value decreased by -47.8% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a slight downturn. Antibiotic consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

India (X kg) was the main destination for antibiotic exports from Sri Lanka, with a 93% share of total exports. Moreover, antibiotic exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Maldives (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to India stood at +22.8%.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the key foreign market for antibiotics exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Maldives ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to India amounted to +16.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The average antibiotic export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -44.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 330%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Maldives totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Maldives (-5.2%).

Antibiotic Imports

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2021, supplies from abroad of antibiotics decreased by -59.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, antibiotic imports fell notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a slight expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), China (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the main suppliers of antibiotic imports to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 87% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +12.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) were the largest antibiotic suppliers to Sri Lanka, with a combined 88% share of total imports.

Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +18.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average antibiotic import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+12.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
