Apple Market Size in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan apple market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced decline. Apple consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of apples, when their volume decreased by -44.1% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 463%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, apple exports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 422%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Oman (X tons) was the main destination for apple exports from Sri Lanka, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, apple exports to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Oman totaled +90.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+112.9% per year) and Maldives (+5.7% per year).

In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the key foreign market for apples exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Maldives ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Oman amounted to +77.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Maldives (+9.8% per year) and Germany (+104.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average apple export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Maldives (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Apple Imports

Imports into Sri Lanka

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of apples increased by 7% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apple imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of apple imports to Sri Lanka, with a combined 64% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +33.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest apple suppliers to Sri Lanka were China ($X), South Africa ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 63% of total imports. These countries were followed by the United States, France, Turkey, New Zealand and Canada, which together accounted for a further 19%.

France, with a CAGR of +31.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average apple import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
