The Sri Lankan stationery market shrank to $X in 2022, waning by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a abrupt decline. Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2022, overseas shipments of articles of stationery decreased by -9.3% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 101%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, stationery exports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 138% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for stationery exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, stationery exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. South Africa (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States stood at +53.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-6.5% per year) and South Africa (+40.8% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for articles of stationery exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States stood at +47.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-9.9% per year) and South Africa (+24.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average stationery export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Sri Lanka

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of articles of stationery decreased by -68.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, stationery imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of stationery to Sri Lanka, with a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, stationery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Israel (X tons), with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-16.2% per year) and Israel (+94.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of articles of stationery to Sri Lanka, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (-13.0% per year) and the United States (+16.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average stationery import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the price for Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
