For the fourth year in a row, Sri Lanka recorded decline in overseas shipments of blankets and travelling rugs of synthetic fibres, which decreased by -2.9% to X units in 2022. In general, exports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 157% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, travelling rugs of synthetic fibre exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 167% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X units) was the main destination for travelling rugs of synthetic fibre exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, travelling rugs of synthetic fibre exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Slovenia (X units), with a 3.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at -15.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+53.2% per year) and Slovenia (-10.0% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for blankets and travelling rugs of synthetic fibres exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Slovenia, with a 4.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled -11.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+55.8% per year) and Slovenia (-11.5% per year).

The average export price for blankets and travelling rugs of synthetic fibres stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -4.3% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, travelling rugs of synthetic fibre export price decreased by -17.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 45%. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Sri Lanka
In 2022, the amount of blankets and travelling rugs of synthetic fibres imported into Sri Lanka declined markedly to X units, waning by -98.7% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, travelling rugs of synthetic fibre imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a sharp decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 81% against the previous year.
