The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average carrot and turnip yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of carrots and turnips production in Sri Lanka contracted to X ha, falling by -3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 195% against the previous year. Exports from Sri Lanka
In 2022, exports of carrots and turnips from Sri Lanka shrank dramatically to X kg, with a decrease of -99.9% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports faced a sharp contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 150%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, carrot and turnip exports contracted notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a dramatic slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 111%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Bahrain (X kg), Qatar (X kg) and Saudi Arabia (X kg) were the main destinations of carrot and turnip exports from Sri Lanka, with a combined 99.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Qatar (with a CAGR of -25.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Qatar ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for carrots and turnips exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Qatar stood at -16.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (-33.6% per year) and Bahrain (-41.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average carrot and turnip export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 52% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Oman (+39.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Carrot And Turnip Imports
Imports into Sri Lanka
For the fourth consecutive year, Sri Lanka recorded decline in purchases abroad of carrots and turnips, which decreased by -30.3% to X kg in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 466% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carrot and turnip imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports faced a sharp decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 218% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X kg) constituted the largest supplier of carrot and turnip to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, carrot and turnip imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X kg), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Australia (X kg), with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -19.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-24.3% per year) and Australia (-14.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carrots and turnips to Sri Lanka, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at -20.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (-12.0% per year) and the Netherlands (-4.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average carrot and turnip import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 127%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
