Cassava Market Size in Sri Lanka

The average yield of cassava in Sri Lanka reached X tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the yield increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the average cassava yield failed to regain momentum. In 2022, cassava exports from Sri Lanka surged to X tons, increasing by 33% compared with 2021. Overall, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 78%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed buoyant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for cassava exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, cassava exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Qatar (X tons), more than tenfold. Oman (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United Arab Emirates stood at +8.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (0.0% per year) and Oman (+24.2% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for cassava exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 7% share of total exports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United Arab Emirates amounted to +9.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+18.0% per year) and Qatar (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cassava export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2022, overseas purchases of cassava decreased by -85% to X kg, falling for the eighth year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 26%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a significant decline. The smallest decline of -17.1% was in 2013. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X kg) was the main cassava supplier to Sri Lanka, with a approx. 100% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Vietnam stood at -52.2%.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cassava to Sri Lanka.

The average cassava import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a buoyant expansion. As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Vietnam.
