After two years of decline, overseas shipments of ceramic household articles and toilet articles increased by 50% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ceramic household article exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons), India (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of ceramic household article exports from Sri Lanka, together accounting for 49% of total exports. Sweden, Brazil, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, China, Australia, the UK and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +100.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for ceramic household article exported from Sri Lanka were India ($X), the United States ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 59% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the United Arab Emirates, Sweden, China, the UK, Germany, Australia, Brazil and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Among the main countries of destination, Sweden, with a CAGR of +106.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average ceramic household article export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 15%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of ceramic household articles and toilet articles, when their volume increased by 139% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports saw a strong increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, ceramic household article imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of ceramic household article to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, ceramic household article imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +7.7%.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ceramic household articles and toilet articles to Sri Lanka, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 4.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +15.3%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average ceramic household article import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -33.6% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, ceramic household article import price decreased by -35.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 40% against the previous year.
