Exports from Sri Lanka
In 2022, the amount of ceramic tiles exported from Sri Lanka declined significantly to X square meters, which is down by -19.8% compared with 2021. Overall, exports showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 66%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ceramic tile exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 66%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Australia (X square meters) was the main destination for ceramic tile exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, ceramic tile exports to Australia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X square meters), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Maldives (X square meters), with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Australia amounted to -4.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+36.9% per year) and Maldives (-12.4% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X), Australia ($X) and Maldives ($X) constituted the largest markets for ceramic tile exported from Sri Lanka worldwide, together comprising 91% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, the United States, with a CAGR of +40.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average ceramic tile export price stood at $X per square meter in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ceramic tile export price increased by +33.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Pakistan (+26.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka
Ceramic tile imports into Sri Lanka reduced sharply to X square meters in 2022, which is down by -24.2% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X square meters in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ceramic tile imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 92% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of ceramic tile to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, ceramic tile imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X square meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Spain (X square meters), with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India amounted to +4.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-11.0% per year) and Spain (+33.5% per year).
In value terms, India ($X), China ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest ceramic tile suppliers to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 70% of total imports.
Spain, with a CAGR of +28.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average ceramic tile import price stood at $X per square meter in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 50% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per square meter), while the price for India ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+6.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
