The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 111% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, other cereals exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 120% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Australia (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of other cereals exports from Sri Lanka, with a combined 62% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Japan (with a CAGR of +52.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of other cerealses, when their volume increased by 94% to X tons. In general, imports showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 2,582% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, other cereals imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 1,177%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of other cereals to Sri Lanka, with a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, other cereals imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), ninefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine totaled +59.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+0.4% per year) and China (-26.9% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of other cereals to Sri Lanka, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Ukraine totaled +76.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+10.1% per year) and China (-29.6% per year).

The average other cereals import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 130%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
