Exports from Sri Lanka
Chicken meat exports from Sri Lanka skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, surging by 141% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 426% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chicken meat exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 312%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Vietnam (X tons), Maldives (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main destinations of chicken meat exports from Sri Lanka, together accounting for 72% of total exports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 15%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +1,063.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Maldives ($X) remains the key foreign market for chicken meat exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Maldives totaled +11.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (-0.6% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-9.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average chicken meat export price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 152%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chicken Meat Imports
Imports into Sri Lanka
For the sixth consecutive year, Sri Lanka recorded decline in supplies from abroad of chicken meat, which decreased by -69.8% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 76%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chicken meat imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Thailand (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of chicken meat imports to Sri Lanka, together comprising 67% of total imports. Belgium, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, India and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of -9.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chicken meat to Sri Lanka, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Thailand amounted to -21.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-31.4% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-16.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average chicken meat import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 44% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+19.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
