Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2022, approx. X tons of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa were exported from Sri Lanka; falling by -87.4% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, saw modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 457% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chocolate exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 507% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Papua New Guinea (X tons), Maldives (X kg) and Cyprus (X kg) were the main destinations of chocolate exports from Sri Lanka, with a combined 93% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Maldives (with a CAGR of +34.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for chocolate exported from Sri Lanka were Papua New Guinea ($X), Maldives ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Cyprus, which accounted for a further 2.2%.

Cyprus, with a CAGR of +35.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average chocolate export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 183% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a resilient expansion. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cyprus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cyprus (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2022, approx. X tons of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa were imported into Sri Lanka; waning by -28.9% on the year before. Overall, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 78% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chocolate imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) constituted the largest chocolate supplier to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, chocolate imports from Malaysia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Malaysia amounted to +38.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (-25.6% per year) and India (+17.1% per year).

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa to Sri Lanka, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Malaysia totaled +35.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+14.6% per year) and Singapore (-28.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average chocolate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -14.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the price for Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
