In 2022, the Sri Lankan common clay market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a modest expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Common Clay Exports
Exports from Sri Lanka
In 2022, shipments abroad of common clay decreased by -20.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 1,065%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, common clay exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 1,260% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
India (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Maldives (X kg) were the main destinations of common clay exports from Sri Lanka, together accounting for 99% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +149.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($X), India ($X) and Australia ($X) constituted the largest markets for common clay exported from Sri Lanka worldwide, with a combined 98% share of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Canada, with a CAGR of +142.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average common clay export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -37.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 55%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Maldives ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Zealand (+13.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Common Clay Imports
Imports into Sri Lanka
In 2022, supplies from abroad of common clay was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 165% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, common clay imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a noticeable expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the UK (X tons) constituted the largest common clay supplier to Sri Lanka, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, common clay imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (X tons), with a 7.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the UK stood at +5.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-7.2% per year) and Japan (-7.3% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of common clay to Sri Lanka, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the UK totaled +11.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+0.7% per year) and China (+0.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average common clay import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, common clay import price increased by +54.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+13.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
