Exports from Sri Lanka
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of cucumbers and gherkins, when their volume decreased by -98.1% to X tons. In general, exports faced a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 5,973%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
In value terms, cucumber and gherkin exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a sharp descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 6,254%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
Maldives (X tons) was the main destination for cucumber and gherkin exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, cucumber and gherkin exports to Maldives exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X kg), more than tenfold. Bahrain (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Maldives amounted to -1.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-42.7% per year) and Bahrain (-4.8% per year).
In value terms, Maldives ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for cucumbers and gherkins exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bahrain ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Maldives amounted to -6.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bahrain (+7.2% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (-43.6% per year).

In 2022, the average cucumber and gherkin export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -59.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 25%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Maldives ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
