Date Market Size in Sri Lanka

In 2022, the Sri Lankan date market decreased by -9.8% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw resilient growth. Date consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2022, the amount of dates exported from Sri Lanka declined dramatically to X tons, reducing by -94.1% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 385%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, date exports declined notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 595%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Norway (X tons) was the main destination for date exports from Sri Lanka, with a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, date exports to Norway exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X kg), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Norway totaled +71.7%.

In value terms, Norway ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for dates exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Norway stood at +44.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The average date export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 85% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (+18.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Date Imports

Imports into Sri Lanka

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of dates decreased by -9.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, date imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Pakistan (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of date to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, date imports from Pakistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Iraq (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia (X tons), with a 20% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Pakistan stood at +102.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iraq (+25.5% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+11.9% per year).

In value terms, the largest date suppliers to Sri Lanka were Pakistan ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Iraq ($X), together comprising 87% of total imports. Iran, India and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +188.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average date import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+15.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
