For the ninth consecutive year, Sri Lanka recorded decline in overseas shipments of dog and cat food, which decreased by -23.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a dramatic setback. The smallest decline of -10.6% was in 2016. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, dog and cat food exports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 10% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Malaysia (X kg) was the main destination for dog and cat food exports from Sri Lanka, with a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, dog and cat food exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Australia (X kg), twofold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Malaysia amounted to -29.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (-31.5% per year) and France (-13.3% per year).
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the key foreign market for dog and cat food exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Malaysia stood at -17.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (-27.6% per year) and France (+14.9% per year).

In 2021, the average dog and cat food export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+32.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Dog And Cat Food
Imports into Sri Lanka
In 2021, the amount of dog and cat food imported into Sri Lanka expanded markedly to X tons, growing by 14% against the year before. Overall, imports recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 55%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, dog and cat food imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
India (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of dog and cat food imports to Sri Lanka, with a combined 60% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Australia, Germany, the UK, South Africa, the United States, Malaysia and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 9.7%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +60.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest dog and cat food suppliers to Sri Lanka were India ($X), Thailand ($X) and the UK ($X), together accounting for 61% of total imports. France, the United States, South Africa, Australia, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.
Germany, with a CAGR of +34.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average dog and cat food import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 3.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+24.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
