The United States (X tons) was the main destination for ghee exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, ghee exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Australia (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States stood at +185.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+248.2% per year) and Australia (0.0% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for ghee exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Australia, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States totaled +145.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+149.7% per year) and Australia (0.0% per year).

In 2022, the average ghee export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka
In 2022, purchases abroad of ghee decreased by -2.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 84%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ghee imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 159%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
India (X tons), Australia (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) were the main suppliers of ghee imports to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 95% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by New Zealand (with a CAGR of +124.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest ghee suppliers to Sri Lanka were Australia ($X), India ($X) and New Zealand ($X), together accounting for 94% of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, New Zealand, with a CAGR of +130.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average ghee import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -13.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 66% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
