In value terms, glutamic acid exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 477%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
Cyprus (X kg) was the main destination for glutamic acid exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, glutamic acid exports to Cyprus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Maldives (X kg), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Cyprus totaled -26.5%.
In value terms, the largest markets for glutamic acid exported from Sri Lanka were Cyprus ($X) and Maldives ($X).
Maldives, with a CAGR of +31.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average glutamic acid export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 37%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cyprus amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cyprus (+58.8%).

Imports into Sri Lanka
In 2022, supplies from abroad of glutamic acid and its salts decreased by -2.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, glutamic acid imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) was the main supplier of glutamic acid to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, glutamic acid imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -5.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+7.1% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+8.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of glutamic acid and its salts to Sri Lanka, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled -2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+6.0% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+3.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average glutamic acid import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the price for Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
