After three years of decline, the Sri Lankan grapefruit market increased by 246% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a measured expansion. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, grapefruit exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a precipitous contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 80%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Bahrain (X kg) was the main destination for grapefruit exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, grapefruit exports to Bahrain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Maldives (X kg), eightfold. Qatar (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.3% share.

Among the main countries of destination, Maldives, with a CAGR of +6.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average grapefruit export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -30.8% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 35%. From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (+52.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2022, supplies from abroad of grapefruits decreased by -31% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports faced a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 524%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, grapefruit imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 423%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Israel (X tons) constituted the largest grapefruit supplier to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, grapefruit imports from Israel exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X kg), tenfold. Australia (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Israel was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-2.1% per year) and Australia (-30.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest grapefruit suppliers to Sri Lanka were Israel ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Thailand ($X), together comprising 87% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +26.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average grapefruit import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 126% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
