For the third consecutive year, the Sri Lankan grape market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -58.6% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. Grape consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the third consecutive year, Sri Lanka recorded decline in supplies from abroad of grapes, which decreased by -47.9% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, grape imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), India (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of grape imports to Sri Lanka, together accounting for 94% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +0.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the largest grape suppliers to Sri Lanka were China ($X), India ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 92% of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +0.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Import Prices by Country

The average grape import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -30.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
