Hairpin exports from Sri Lanka declined significantly to X kg in 2021, reducing by -20.1% against the year before. In general, exports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 893%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hairpin exports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 1,608% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Oman (X kg) was the main destination for hairpin exports from Sri Lanka, accounting for a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, hairpin exports to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X kg), fivefold. Costa Rica (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Oman stood at -36.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+369.0% per year) and Costa Rica (+22.5% per year).
In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the key foreign market for hairpin exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Maldives, with a 1.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Oman stood at +17.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+1,623.4% per year) and Maldives (-37.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average hairpin export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 155%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Costa Rica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+193.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Hairpin Imports
Imports into Sri Lanka
For the fourth year in a row, Sri Lanka recorded growth in purchases abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers, which increased by 1,072% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a moderate increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, hairpin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of hairpin to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, hairpin imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +35.9%.
In value terms, China ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the largest hairpin suppliers to Sri Lanka.
India, with a CAGR of +31.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review.
Import Prices by Country
The average hairpin import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -30.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 114% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for India totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
