Headphone Market Size in Sri Lanka

After two years of growth, the Sri Lankan headphone market decreased by -51.5% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2022, the amount of headphones exported from Sri Lanka reduced to X units, declining by -10.4% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 471%. The exports peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, headphone exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 489% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X units), Singapore (X units) and Maldives (X units) were the main destinations of headphone exports from Sri Lanka, together accounting for 99% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +79.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest markets for headphone exported from Sri Lanka were Singapore ($X), China ($X) and Maldives ($X), together accounting for 97% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +58.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average headphone export price amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Maldives ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Headphone Imports

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2022, purchases abroad of headphones decreased by -35% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 86%. Imports peaked at X units in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, headphone imports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 82%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) was the main headphone supplier to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, headphone imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Hong Kong SAR (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Singapore (X units), with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +5.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-13.3% per year) and Singapore (-15.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of headphones to Sri Lanka, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +7.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+0.9% per year) and Singapore (-19.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average headphone import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -34.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 51%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+16.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
