In 2021, supplies from abroad of iodine, fluorine and bromine decreased by -54.8% to X kg for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 476%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 417%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In 2021, India (X kg) constituted the largest iodine, fluorine and bromine supplier to Sri Lanka, accounting for a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, iodine, fluorine and bromine imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X kg), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X kg), with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India stood at +18.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+16.7% per year) and China (-10.1% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of iodine, fluorine and bromine to Sri Lanka, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from India stood at +35.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+31.9% per year) and Japan (+92.8% per year).

The average iodine, fluorine and bromine import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 69% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 151% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+30.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
